Sharks shuttle out Rivet
The Buffalo Sabres acquired veteran defenseman Craig Rivet from the San Jose Sharks on Friday.
The Sharks sent the 33-year-old veteran and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 Entry Draft to the Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 Drafts.
My are we seeing a lot of salary-cap related trades this summer.
The Sabres get the veteran defenceman they're looking for, San Jose trims its overcrowded blueline by one (albeit for not much in return), and Rivet's $3.5-million salary with three years left is punted from one conference to the next.
Here's a deal that's related to the Sabres sending Steve Bernier to Vancouver for picks, and is definitely directly tied to the one earlier today that saw Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich end up in San Jose. The Sabres get the veteran defenceman they're looking for, San Jose trims its overcrowded blueline by one (albeit for not much in return), and Rivet's $3.5-million salary with three years left is punted from one conference to the next.
It's a game of musical chairs, really. I'm beginning to wonder if all analysis of teams' rosters might just as well wait until September.
UPDATE I'll be on The Team 1260 in Edmonton at about 5:50 p.m.
UPDATE Kevin Lowe was on next and upstaged me a bit.
