The Vancouver Canucks added some depth down the middle for next season, claiming soon-to-be restricted free agent centre Kyle Wellwood off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.Wellwood made just $950,000 last year and a qualifying offer would come cheap. He had a tough season last year here in Toronto, but has some potential, and Vancouver's desperate for forward depth — especially if they lose Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison to free agency.
The Canucks can retain his rights by giving him a qualifying offer and he would not become an unrestricted free agent.
It's no surprised Wellwood was picked up given he could be had for nothing. It'll be incredibly interesting to see just who fills out the forward lines for the Maple Leafs this season.
